Born in Genoa in 1957, he holds a degree in Business Economics from the Bocconi University in Milan. Having gained a significant experience in credit, finance and consultancy in senior positions in Banco Lariano, McKinsey, Bain, Cuneo & Associates, Riunione Adriatica di Sicurtà, he joined Credito Italiano in 1994 as Central co-director, subsequently became Director General and CEO, a position he continued to hold after the merger and up to 2010 when he left the group. At present Alessandro Profumo holds a number of management posts. Since 2011 he is the Chairman of a financial consultancy company, Appeal Strategy&Finance, member of the Supervisory Board of the Russian Sberbank, Member of the Board of Directors of Eni and Director of the TOG Foundation. Since 2012 he has been a member of the International Advisory Board of the Brazilian Bank Itaù Unibanco. Furthermore, since 2006, is he a Member of the Board of the Luigi Bocconi Business School. From 28 April 2012 he was Chairman of MPS Bank.
